In 2014 Arnaud Rebotini cleverly applied his sound universe to the images of Robin Campillo’s Eastern Boys. He alternated between streamlined sequences leaning towards minimalism, repetitive music – à la Philip Glass – and dark and hypnotic electro tornadoes. In the end, his score is one of the key elements of this beautiful and troubling film… The filmmaker worked for the second time with Mister Black Strobe for the soundtrack of his 120 Beats per Minute. A music journalist Didier Lestrade, who knows Act Up and dance music, describes as follows: “Between 1992 and 1995, the period described in 120 BPM, house music reached its peak… This soundtrack provides balance to the film, justifying such a conceptual title: 120 BPM, house music and the heart’s natural rhythm, the music that helps us keep going when we think we’d give up, the most important musical movement of the last thirty years, along with hip hop…”. For this fascinating but sensitive project, as it switches from moments of pure struggle to light and hedonistic sequences, Arnaud Robotini unravelled a multicolour house score for which he created a recurring theme that keeps coming back throughout the film, as a dotted line. An unbreakable common thread that evolves depending on the themes, from minimalistic and introspective to completely dance floor and space music, almost new age. The musician’s strength is to remain perfectly in tune with the time depicted – the beginning of the 90s – while giving his compositions a contemporary feel. Even more than in Eastern Boys, the soundtrack for 120 Beats per Minute is a key element of Campillo’s film. © MD/Qobuz
