In 2013, Galcher Lustwerk burst into the dance music industry with his Blowing Up the Workshop series, founded by Matthew Kent from Mana Records. His hour-long mix, consisting entirely of original tracks that he composed himself (a la Ricardo Villalobos on Fabric 36), was spotted by Pitchfork and Resident Advisor and became both his calling card and his debut album. This record is also perfectly in line with the times, considering the rise of the deep house scene 2.0 led by DJ Qu and Jus Ed.
Originally from Cleveland, Lustwerk pursued a music career by moving to New York in 2012, where he started tinkering with his first tracks, which Kent eventually came across online. These tracks eventually served as the basis for his first DJ mix, which included dreamy vignettes (‘Entreprise’), solo synth interludes (‘Stem’), tributes to the 90s vocal house of New York (‘Put On’) and to the ghetto house that was rampant in Chicago during the same decade (‘Cricket's Theme’)… Lustwerk shows that he knows his classics but is able to put his own twist on them, juxtaposing his deep vocals with cosmic and entrancing sound design. The re-release of this record/mix by his label Ghostly International ten years later has thrilled many fans of refined house music. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
