Nordic Jazz in 10 Albums
by Marc Zisman
Snowy scenes, big expanses, beautiful nature everywhere… Scandinavia is often described by the same old clichés. Jazz is no exception. We tend to talk about Scandi jazz like it’s one big genre. However, each country has its own distinct style; Denmark’s scene rivals traditional North American jazz, Norway tends to get experimental and Sweden treads the line between the two. Nordic musicians have been adding their own unique touch to the genre since the 70s and the younger generation continue to sculpt its future. Here, we zoom in on Scandinavian jazz in 10 albums, offering a glimpse into a discography that’s as wide as a fjord.
Bobo Stenson Trio – Serenity (2000)
You’d better forget the Keith Jarrett tag that people have often stuck to Bobo Stenson. Even though he regularly played with the American’s three Scandinavian partners (Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen), Stenson had a thoroughly distinctive style. After spending the 60s accompanying jazz stars who passed through Stockholm (Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Don Cherry, Gary Burton), this subtle pianist started to feed off a wide variety of sources and influences. His music was never limited to one place. He expanded his world into the many corners of improv, be it jazz or some other genre. This eclecticism made Stenson a great match for his label: ECM. His Serenity album with his piano/bass/drums trio is arguably his best work. Mixing their own compositions with pieces by Wayne Shorter, Silvio Rodriguez, Alban Berg, Charles Ives, Hanns Eisler and Lorens Brolin, the three men invented their own melody-centric semantics. Even in their most adventurous improvisations, Bobo Stenson and his rhythmic section never broke the thread that linked these composers and disparate periods. They marry traditional jazz and European/Cuban folk with 20th century classical. As is often the case with this kind of musician - the ones who always have one ear pricked, listening out to what the others are doing - silence and space are the specialities here.
E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio) – Seven Days of Falling (2003)
During their fifteen-year-long career (which ended when their leader died in a scuba diving accident at the age of 44) Esbjörn Svensson’s percussive trio never sat still. Together with drummer Magnus Öström and bassist Dan Berglund, the Swedish pianist went full tilt. If you thought the piano/bass/drums trio was a bit passé, you’d be forgetting this trio who left their mark on hordes of people in the 90s. At first, their music felt a bit like a smokescreen. But Svensson wasn’t just a jazz pianist with an eye for rock and drum’n’bass... As proved by Seven Days of Falling, E.S.T.’s soul remained viscerally jazzy and sagacious. On this record, which was released in late 2003, the band celebrated their ten-year-long career by demonstrating their unfailing complicity. More than ever before, their three personalities merged into one voice. They cited Radiohead, The Police, Deep Purple and Aphex Twin as their inspirations, though the essence of Ballad for the Unborn, Believe, Beleft, Below and Why She Didn't Come lies elsewhere. They skilfully play with space and silence (did someone say it’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play?!). They cleverly weave rhythms around melodies (Seven Days of Falling). They purify their art and explore repetition (Did They Ever Tell Cousteau?). They reaffirm their values and then quickly sweep them away again. Seven Days of Falling is the album that most and least sounds like E.S.T. It’s also their best.
Mette Henriette – Mette Henriette (2015)
A double album for a debut. ECM as a label. And Anton Corbijn designing the album cover. Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg made waves when she wowed the international jazz scene in 2015. The young saxophonist from Trondheim chose to split her record in two. She played in trio for the first part with cellist Katrine Schiøtt and pianist Johan Lindvall. For the second, she played with a group of 13 musicians with trumpet, trombone, accordion, piano, double bass, drums and the Cikada Quartet’s strings. The first thing that hits you with this amazing, dense double album is the serene feeling that you can’t help but suspect mirrors the composer’s personality. Everything is like a whisper. Slow breathing, a warm atmosphere, weightlessness. Infused with jazz and classical music in equal measure, the 1h40m album was composed over a decade. Mette Henriette focuses more on the music than her instrument. Her improvisations are more like textures than phrases. The relationship she maintains with her multiple accomplices exhibits a rare intensity. The spaces give this record an immense breadth, which the saxophonist fleshes out on stage by designing scenography, choreographies and light installations. Impressive!
Hanna Paulsberg Concept – Eastern Smiles (2016)
What if Sonny Rollins had a daughter and she was... Norwegian?! Hanna Paulsberg’s powerful roar may well echo that of the musician behind The Bridge, but it is nevertheless very unique. At the head of her quartet (called the Hanna Paulsberg Concept and composed of pianist Oscar Grönberg, drummer Erik Nylander and double bassist Trygve Fiske) the thirty-year-old saxophonist from Rygge, daughter of a jazz drummer, unveiled compositions that she performed with energy and robustness. On this lush post-bop album from 2016, the tenor virtuoso makes her sound more delicate. Each phrase is fluid, elegant. Stan Getz’s ghost - whose music, especially Café Montmartre, encouraged her to take up the sax – doesn’t feel far away. Paulsberg never overdoes it, avoiding complacency and gratuitous reed effects. Her broad sound even caught the attention of the legendary pianist Chick Corea, who invited her to play alongside him. Three years after Eastern Smiles, Paulsberg broadened her spectrum with the mystical and spiritual Daughter of the Sun, a record that was dedicated to Hatshepsut, a queen of ancient Egypt who would become the pharaoh. She created the album together with Swedish trumpet player Magnus Broo and veered towards more traditional African sounds.
Geir Sundstøl – Brødløs (2018)
This choice is a bit of a trick. Not that it’s not an amazing album - quite the opposite. But it’s less about the album and more about the label: Hubro. Meaning owl in Norwegian, it was one of the most exciting labels around in the 2010s. You can’t talk about Scandinavian jazz without mentioning it. Founded in Haugesund, a small town on the west coast of Norway, by Andreas Meland, Hubro brought the vibrant local jazz scene to light. Well, it mostly sticks to the jazz scene, but it doesn’t stop there. Like ECM – though a much more modern, DIY version - Hubro is rooted in jazz but has been quick to branch out into all types of improvised music as well as venturing into post-rock, electro, folk, rock, ambient, you name it! Any album released on this label is one-of-a-kind. Brødløs included. It’s the third album by guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Geir Sundstøl and it sounds a bit like the soundtrack to a western movie set under the northern lights. It was created together with other Nordic madmen including Nils Petter Molvær, Erland Dahlen, David Wallumrød, Mats Eilersten, Jo Berger Myhre, without forgetting the incredible tabla player Sanskriti Shrestha. There’s a bit of Bill Frisell and Brian Eno in Sundstøl, who shapes his music like it’s clay. With the pedal steel, six-string bass, harmonica, banjo, mandolin and a Moog, Sundstøl cleared out his attic and set off on a fascinating expedition to the borders of ambient music. Just like everything Andreas Meland offers up on Hubro, this album is captivating. Legend even has it that Brødløs is his most played record...
