Nordic Electronic in 11 Artists

The musicians of Northern Europe have always brought their personal Arctic twist to all genres of music, and the world of electronic music is no exception. Here’s an overview of 11 Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish artists who have taken techno, house, disco and dub towards new horizons.

Vladislav Delay
Sasu Ripatti first hit the radar in 2000, as Luomo (one of his many aliases) with the club hit Tessio (on his album Vocalcity), an ultra-moving 12-minute deep house track with R&B vocals that classified the Finn as a Moodymann on Tranxene. But Ripatti hates labels, and would use a slew of pseudonyms to satisfy his lust for exploration, in techno, glitch, microhouse, dub and jazz, for such prestigious labels as Raster-Noton and Chain Reaction: as Sistol, Uusitalo, Conoco, but above all Vladislav Delay, the name he uses to explore dub techno. Unsurprisingly, he joined the master of the genre, Moritz Von Oswald (one half of German group Maurizio) for his “jazz” project with Max Loderbauer, the Moritz von Oswald Trio. Replaced by Tony Allen on drums in 2015, Ripatti answered the call of Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær to join him for the album Nordub in 2018, with reggae’s most legendary bass/drums duo, Sly and Robbie. Vladislav Delay headed down to Kingston, Jamaica for sessions that would produce the album 500 Push-Up, one of the major lessons in artistic daring released in 2020, a year that opened with his release of Rakka, a possibly genius glitch album.

Röyksopp 
Röyksopp hit the big time in no time at all. Originally from the town of Tromsø, above the Arctic Circle, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge almost took the advice of local electronica legend Biosphere and signed with famed Belgian label R&S Records, before landing further south in Bergen to launch their project in 1998. The duo was all set; they zoomed to success with their debut album Melody AM in 2001, carried by electronic nursery rhyme Eple and Poor Leno, a retro house track that slipped perfectly into the ’90s “French Touch” vibe of the time. The Norwegian pair dug into an electro-pop groove on the two subsequent albums, Understanding in 2005 and above all, Junior in 2009, assembling a wonderful cast of Scandinavian voices featuring their fellow Norwegian Anneli Drecker (Bel Canto) and Swedes Karin Dreijer (The Knife, Fever Ray), Lykke Li and Robyn, on the hit single The Girl and the Robot, a tribute to I Feel Love by Donna Summer and Moroder. Acknowledging the decline of the record market, Röyksopp bid farewell to the album format with The Inevitable End in 2014, focusing on producing other artists (like Norwegian rapper Lars Vaular), remixes and singles, along with composing for TV and theatre. Since 2019, Brundtland and Berge have been scouring the vaults with their Lost Tapes series, doling out a slew of unreleased tracks, B-sides and other exclusives.

Kasper Bjørke 
Building bridges between radio and clubland – that’s the mission of Denmark’s Kasper Bjørke, a multi-talented artist and producer, manager (of Trentemøller) and label boss (Fake Diamond). He first stepped up at the turn of the millennium as half of the Filur group, a disco-house duo formed with Tomas Barfod that became “big in Japan”, and a little in Europe as well. In 2003, Barfod left to man the drums in WhoMadeWho, and Bjørke launched a solo career with Standing on Top of Utopia in 2010, composed in New York and hugely influenced by DFA Records, label of James Murphy and his LCD Soundsystem. It worked like mad, thanks largely to the single Young Again with Jacob Bellens. Having established his name, Bjørke continued to pump out house/disco/pop hits for a few years, while mixing in signature techno clubs like Watergate in Berlin, before shifting gears with After Forever in 2014, a decidedly dark synthpop album. He returned to the dancefloor two years later with Fountain of Youth, but in 2018, launched a new twist with the appearance of the Kasper Bjørke Quartet, releasing The Fifty Eleven Project, a two-hour ambient/classic work on the Cologne Kompakt label.
