About Playlist

While you can find the bones of outlaw country in the rockabilly and honky-tonk swagger of 1950s Sun Records productions—and the genre hit the mainstream with 1976's Wanted! The Outlaws album featuring Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser and Jessi Colter (before, of course, reviving nearly a decade later with The Highwaymen: Jennings, Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson)—1972 was the year the concept really took root. Fed up with the increasingly formulaic and polished Nashville sound, Jennings released Ladies Love Outlaws that year. Kris Kristofferson gave us the now-classic Jesus Was a Capricorn, Townes van Zandt delivered "Poncho & Lefty" and Tanya Tucker wowed the world with "Delta Dawn." Sure, she was only 13 at the time, but can you think of a more unapologetically badass country artist? Loretta Lynn released two records, as did Jennings and Merle Haggard (including "Irma Jackson," a song about interracial love that his record label wouldn't let him release for several years prior). This playlist looks back on how outlaw country started to find its footing 50 years ago. Image: Townes Van Zandt © Al Clayton
