Bitter Tears

Despite the unrelenting clichés that are associated- sometimes justifiably- with country music, Johnny Cash always managed to retain his own free, distinctive voice, often using it to defend the widow, orphan and oppressed, and to rise up against all injustices… And so, in 1964, Cash released Bitter Tears, a masterpiece that recalls the fate that America held in store for its original inhabitants, the American Indians. To celebrate the 50 years since the album’s release, the producer Joe Henry had the inspired idea of gathering the elite of contemporary folk and country music, to revisit Cash’s masterpiece. The recently released album Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash’s Bitter Tears Revisited includes Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, the Milk Carton Kids and even Rhiannon Giddens from the Carolina Chocolate Drops. An impressive line-up for an impressive tribute.
