So Much Light

Under the guise of his stage name, So Much Light, singer/songwriter-producer Damien Verrett is able to combine his love of yearning, contemporary R&B, electronica, and ambitiously layered indie pop. Growing up in the Sacramento area, Verrett studied saxophone in elementary school before picking up the guitar around age 12. Initially, he took lessons with his father, an R&B-, blues- and rock-oriented guitarist. From there, he taught himself to play along with classics by Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin before discovering his love of contemporary R&B artists like R. Kelly and Drake. During high school, he played in various bands and continued working on numerous electronic and indie rock projects while attending the University of California, Davis. After graduating, he began crafting the sound of So Much Light, recording in his bedroom at his parent's house and layering bass, drum, and guitar with electronics and keyboards. An initial EP appeared on Anti-Epitaph in 2015 and helped draw attention to his emotive, cross-genre style. Two years later, he delivered his full-length debut, Oh, Yuck, which included the single "Be Afraid," featuring a guest appearance by Chicago singer Nnamdi Ogbonnaya.
