Marinero

Marinero (aka singer-songwriter Jess Sylvester) began life as a woozy bedroom indie band with Latin influences, then grew to something much more musically involved with a sound that paid homage to influences as wide as Broadcast, Carole King, Los Pasteles Verdes, and Ennio Morricone. After initial releases that had a noisier approach like 2018's High Tone, Sylvester began refining and expanding the group sound into something intimate and subdued (2019's TRÓPICO DE CÁNCER), and 2021's Hella Love was as artfully arranged as a Beach Boys album, only with plenty of soft Latin sounds mixed in. After spending time in the early 2010s playing in Bay Area bands like Violent Change and Tiger Uppercut! and working with Los Amparito's Carlos Pesina on a sample-based duo Francisco y Madero, Sylvester's first recording under the name Marinero is 2016's Chican@, an EP featuring a guitar-heavy psychedelic rock feel. Ryan Michael Keller of the band Self Care helped out on drums. His next projects were two mixtapes -- Cholo Hi-FI Vol II: High Mija and Cholo Hi-FI Vol III: B Side Brujas -- that fused classic soul ballads, Latin soul groovers, and murky psychedelic funk into a heady mix of late-night jams. The second Marinero release, 2018's High Tone, showed the influence of those mixtapes, plus some wobbly Beach Boys harmonies, bedroom balladry, and introspective singer/songwriter feels. He's joined again by Keller on drums and a small horn section pops up occasionally too. The first full-length Marinero album dials up the recording quality, delves into more Latin influence and bossa nova rhythms, and places more emphasis on his upfront vocals. Recorded solo at Private Palace Studios in Zapopan, Jalisco, TRÓPICO DE CÁNCER was released in July of 2019. The album impressed the staff of Hardly Art Records and the second Marinero album came out under their sponsorship. With a long list of collaborators that includes Pat Thomas on bass and keys, Bee Wright on guitar, drummer John Wujcik, and a full horn section, Hella Love is a richer, more carefully arranged take on the sound of his previous album. Along with the expanded instrumentation, Sylvester adds some soft rock smoothness, glittery disco beats, sweeping vocal harmonies, and at the center, his ever more intimate vocals. The album was co-produced by Jason Kick (Mild High Club) and was recorded in Oakland, just before Sylvester moved from the Bay Area to Los Angeles.
