Marco Albonetti

Saxophonist Marco Albonetti performs diverse programs that include elements of his classical and jazz training, the tango music in which he has specialized, and other traditions. In 2021, he released the album Romance del Diablo: The Music of Piazzolla. A native of Italy, Albonetti studied at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro with Enzo Veddovi. A formative experience was hearing Piazzolla's music as it was broadcast on Italian radio after the Argentine tango master's death in 1992. Albonetti went on for a master's degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, studying with John Sampen and earning summa cum laude honors. He also studied at the Sommerakademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, with Jean-Marie Londeix and Eugène Rousseau. Albonetti earned a doctorate from Michigan State University in 2005, becoming the first Italian saxophonist to receive a D.M.A. degree in the U.S. During this period, he undertook not only classical studies with Joseph Lulloff and James Forger but also jazz classes with Branford Marsalis. Wins at several competitions propelled his career, including the Roodeport International Eistedford in South Africa, the Fifth International Competition "Isola di Capri," and the 13th International Competition for Young Musicians "Città di Stresa" in Italy. Albonetti has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall as well as other major halls, including the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, and the Teatro Español de Madrid. He is a frequent guest at festivals around Europe and the U.S., and he has performed concertos with the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the Central Conservatory Strings in Beijing, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, as well as several major Italian ensembles. He has been a member of the Accademia Bizantina orchestra and the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet. In 2021, Albonetti released the album Romance del Diablo: The Music of Piazzolla and announced plans to tour with that material later that year. He has taught at Lawrence University, the Flint Institute of Arts, and the Conservatorio Statale di Musica di Bari, Italy, where he is professor of saxophone.
