Lauran Hibberd

Inspired by the quirky, melodic 1990s U.S. alt-rock of Weezer and Green Day, witty English singer/songwriter Lauran Hibberd emerged from the same early-2020s Isle of Wight indie scene as Wet Leg and Coach Party. Hibberd was born in 1997 and began learning guitar at the age of 14, initially composing moody, folk-based songs, in a very different style to those with which she later found success. An opportunity to make her debut live performance at the Isle of Wight festival arose when her father lent fencing to the event's organizers. After being introduced to Weezer's music by a local producer, she became obsessed with their hook-filled, unpretentious approach to guitar pop. On graduating from the Isle of Wight-based Platform One music college in 2015, Hibberd won a competition to open the main stage at that year's Bestival, on the nearby mainland. In November 2017, Hibberd self-released her first single, "Hunny is this What Adults Do?," but it was the following year's "Fun Like This" -- issued on the Norwegian imprint Diamond Club -- that really displayed her love of Weezer. In August 2018, her punky follow-up single, "Call Shotgun," was playlisted by BBC Radio 1. Although that track was issued on Diamond Club's parent label, Brilliance, for the next two years Hibberd opted to self-release her music, in turn retaining closer control of her output. By 2019, listeners would've been forgiven for thinking that Hibberd was an American artist, as her singing voice -- on tracks such as "Hoochie" -- increasingly nodded to the U.S. artists that she adored. She released her debut EP, Everything Is Dogs, that year as well as making an appearance at Glastonbury. October 2020 brought "Boy Bye," her first release via eOne Music and, early the following year, she collaborated with Lydia Night of L.A.'s the Regrettes on "How Am I Still Alive?" That track appeared on the Suzy Shinn-produced Goober EP, issued in mid-2021. By the end of the year, Hibberd signed to Virgin Records, and October's "Charlie's Car" became her inaugural release on the label. Early 2022 saw her tour the U.K. with Stand Atlantic and the Snuts while releasing a run of singles that ultimately appeared on Garageband Superstar, her August-issued debut album. Written entirely during the previous years' COVID-19 lockdowns, the record was co-produced by her near namesake, Larry Hibbitt, at the ex-Hundred Reasons member's Brixton studio, and featured guest appearances from Wheatus' Brendan B. Brown and House of Pain and Limp Bizkit turntablist DJ Lethal.
