Koreless

Welsh producer Koreless makes highly physical music which seldom incorporates beats, instead building looped samples and chopped vocals into hypnotic rhythmic patterns. Influenced by science fiction writers like J.G. Ballard and minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and La Monte Young, his music is intended to be artificial and process-based, yet still express wide-screen emotions. He collaborated with Sampha as the duo Short Stories, and has additionally worked with David Byrne, FKA twigs, SBTRKT, and others. A decade after the release of his first single, his full-length debut Agor arrived in 2021. Lewis Roberts was born in Bangor, Wales. After relocating to Glasgow to study Naval Architecture at University, Roberts became involved in the Glasgow electronic music scene, working alongside the All Caps, Lucky Me, and Numbers collectives. Even before he was signed, Roberts' early productions were being played by the likes of James Blake, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, both at nightclubs and on British national radio. His first vinyl release was the single 4D/MTI, issued by Pictures Music in 2011 and quickly followed by notable collaborations with vocalist/musician Sampha (as Short Stories) and producer Jacques Green. He also remixed music by Foals ("Late Night") and How to Dress Well ("Cold Nites"), among many others. In 2012, Roberts released the track "Lost in Tokyo," featuring a remix by Jacques Green on the B-side. His next EP, Yugen, was released by Young Turks in 2013, seeing a slight stylistic change moving toward sci-fi-sounding, synth-driven, yet beatless music. He opened for Mogwai at the Royal Festival Hall in 2014, performing with a string trio, and toured with Caribou throughout Europe and North America in 2015. After releasing the 2015 single "TT," Roberts wrote or produced material on albums by David Byrne (American Utopia), Rita Ora (Phoenix), FKA twigs (Magdalene), and others. Koreless returned in 2020 with the single "White Picket Fence," and debut album Agor was released in 2021, containing some of his most vivid, intricate compositions. A music video for "White Picket Fence," directed by FKA twigs, was shared shortly after the album's release.
