Jeymes Samuel

Fusing classic soundtrack music with hip-hop like his U.S. counterpart Adrian Younge, U.K. singer, producer, and filmmaker Jeymes Samuel sometimes uses the moniker the Bullitts for his unclassifiable music. After releasing the mixtape Urban Folk Music: The Prequel under his own name in 2006, he debuted as the Bullitts with They Die by Dawn & Other Short Stories in 2013. As Jeymes Samuel, he returned with his part orchestral, part genre-defying song score for the 2021 film The Harder They Fall. He then wrote, directed, and co-produced the 2023 biblical comedy-drama film The Book of Clarence, for which he also composed the music. A native of London, Samuel was a filmmaker first, having shot his first reels at the age of eight, but he began making music as a teen, initially with forays into house music and releasing his 12" "When It Rains" under his own name on the Giant Steps label in 2000. Following some additional short-form releases, his 2006 album, Urban Folk Music: The Prequel, was based in hip-hop and released on Little League, a label that would debut his Bullitts project in 2007 with a single of "The Bullitts Theme." Named in honor of the Steve McQueen film Bullitt, the project began uploading a series of "FlixTapes" videos to the Internet in 2010, with Samuel adding new vocals to his favorite movie and television themes. In 2011, he released the single "Close Your Eyes," which featured the surprising guest list of actress Lucy Liu and rapper Jay Electronica. The single "Supercool" followed later in the year, with the debut Bullitts album, the self-produced They Die by Dawn & Other Short Stories, arriving in mid-2013. It was a tie-in to the film They Die by Dawn, which was written and directed by Samuel in addition to a starring role alongside Rosario Dawson and Giancarlo Esposito. That year, he was also enlisted by Jay-Z and director Baz Luhrmann to be Executive Music Consultant on Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Samuel's documentary short JAY-Z: Legacy eventually followed in 2017. Samuel next wrote, directed, and produced the 2021 Western The Harder They Fall. His original score for the film was released on Geneva Club/Roc Nation in January 2022. Samuel also contributed "No Turning Around" to its accompanying soundtrack, which included songs by Kid Cudi and Jay-Z, CeeLo Green, and Laura Mvula, among many others. Samuel's next film was The Book of Clarence, which he co-produced with Jay-Z, James Lassiter, and Tendo Nagenda. The film premiered at the London Film Festival in 2023, and was released in the United States in early 2024. The album's original score and soundtrack were both composed by Samuel and released the same day as the movie. The soundtrack includes appearances by D'Angelo, Jorge Ben Jor, Terry Callier, Doja Cat, and several others.
