Helene Clement

Violist Hélène Clément is the violist of Britain's Doric String Quartet. She is also a notable educator and is a frequent guest at festivals as a performer-instructor. Clément was born in 1988 and grew up in Clermont-Ferrand. Her mother was a violinist, and she has ascribed her interest in the viola to wanting to do something similar to her mother's profession but different. She began taking lessons there and then moved to the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris, also studying the viola in Munich with Hariolf Schlichtig. She went on for two years of study with violist Tabea Zimmermann in Berlin, making a living as a chamber music player in France, Germany, and the U.S. For a time, she was active as an extra violist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig and other ensembles. Clément has appeared with various high-profile chamber music partners, including cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, pianists Jonathan Biss and Mitsuko Uchida, and violinist Alina Ibragimova, and she has performed with chamber and orchestral groups, including the Brentano String Quartet and the Nash Ensemble. She is often a guest at the Prussia Cove festival in Britain and the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont in the U.S. In 2013, Clément joined the Doric String Quartet and has toured widely with that group, appearing at such major venues as Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin. She moved to London that year, and her hobbies there include pairing French wines with English cheeses and riding a motorcycle. Clément and the Doric String Quartet have amassed a substantial catalog of recordings on the Chandos label, where the group began recording in 2010; Clément has appeared on most of those, including 2022's Mendelssohn: The String Quintets. Clément is on the faculty at the Royal Academy of Chamber Music in London, where she teaches viola and chamber music.
