A complete (!) album of melodies by Ralph Vaughan Williams - the greatest English composer of the 20th century alongside Britten - cannot be overlooked. His two most famous cycles, the Songs of Travel and On Wenlock Edge do not feature on the album (the works here are composed for tenor, piano and string quartet) but instead we find rarer scores full of the English composer’s typical moving lyricism, such as in the second melody Silent Noon from the cycle The House of Life (the most famous cycle here), a piece with noticeable continental influences. In the pieces from his youth (the first seventeen date from the early 1900s), Vaughan Williams does not exactly assert himself, but shows a unique sensitivity to the words and narrative, especially since the piano parts remain uncluttered. A highlight of the album is the mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, with her sumptuous timbre and expressive diction, who shares the programme’s various melodies with the baritone Roderick Williams. The House of Life takes on autumnal hues with Whately’s amber voice, contrasting with the baritone’s gravelly timbre. Williams sings more of the popular melodies, such as Three Old German Songs, which recalls baroque choirs, or French Songs, not forgetting the wonderful A Piper from Seumas O'Sullivan’s Two Poems. Thanks goes to the label Albion, who have once again delivered a precious Vaughan Williams album, a true essential for all lovers of this repertoire. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

Radu Lupu: an Understated Genius

Radu Lupu was a poet, magician and pianist who pursued the indescribable. The Romanian artist’s musical approach was brought to life by his tormented and fiercely introverted personality, which was always shrouded in mystery. When sat at his piano, he would knead the keys like dough, seeking a powerful, consistent sound. Radu Lupu passed away on the 17th of April 2022, leaving behind a relatively small, yet incredibly valuable, discographic legacy.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.
