In her albums, music videos, concerts, interviews, in short, everywhere, Annie Clark aka St. Vincent has always made it clear that her art reaches out beyond the strictly musical. With The Nowhere Inn, the Texan adds another piece to her unique puzzle. One of the most intriguing fixtures of the contemporary rock scene, she is often reminiscent of her idol, David Bowie... The starting point of The Nowhere Inn project is a documentary which was conceived with her musician and actress friend Carrie Brownstein (who is also the singer-guitarist with Sleater-Kinney), and which is directed by Bill Benz. The film is a pretext for a spoof documentary with an offbeat sense of humour, which deals with Clark herself as well as the trials and tribulations of fame... Being a virtuoso musician, St. Vincent gives the soundtrack everything she has got, and the result is an album that is very much a reflection of her own persona, and almost totally instrumental. Curiosity is the order of the day on this score, which is as weird as a David Lynch feature, and blends indie rock, new-wave synths, country, classic rock, freakish funk, post-rock and new age passages. The short (under a minute long) sound vignettes are often fascinating, even divorced from the picture. They are like the echoes of her past songs.
