Jimmy Giuffre's four Atlantic albums of 1958 are among his rarest and most satisfying releases. Unlike the other three, this particular set finds Giuffre (tripling as usual on clarinet, tenor and baritone) leading a somewhat conventional band, a seven-horn pianoless nonet. They perform 11 songs from the musical The Music Man, best-known of which are "76 Trombones," "Gary, Indiana" and "Till There Was You." The arrangements (all by Giuffre) swing, the beauty and joy of the melodies are brought out, and the leader (who takes all of the solos except on "The Wells Fargo Wagon") is in top form. A true rarity.

Saxophone: The tenor’s big names

How did the saxophone, this instrument invented by a Belgian for military orchestras, become reserved to one genre? How did jazzmen get their hands on Adolphe Sax’s invention? This is the first part of a series devoted to the instrument’s giants, starting with the tenor—pay honor where honor is due— and its many adepts, from Coleman Hawkins to Wayne Shorter.

The Eternal John Coltrane

17th July 1967 marked the passing of the American saxophonist, at just 40 years old. The recordings he left behind have completely reshaped the history of his instrument, that of jazz and of 20th century music altogether.

Jazz: A Woman's World

Excluding singers, women in jazz haven’t had an easy time making their way to the front of the stage. There are of course the likes of Mary Lou Williams, Jaimie Branch, Geri Allen and Alice Coltrane. But up until recently, female jazz artists have been few and far between in the male-dominated and at times rather sexist genre.
