Sometimes, Christmas songs do more than conjure up images of blatant commercialism and forced family congeniality. Even the blackest heart cannot deny the healing power of hearing Judy Garland sing the winsomely nostalgic "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" or the joyful bounce of Chet Atkins' guitar on "Jingle Bell Rock." It's nice that these and three other holiday classics occur at the very beginning of Surviving Christmas, because any listener willing to wade through the crap that follows is indeed a fetishist. Somewhere between a terrible remix of Bing Crosby singing "Happy Holidays" -- simply laying down a hip-hop beat and playing with vocal effects is neat if you're 14 -- and a truly forgettable score from the usually reliable Randy Edelman, the not-so-ironically titled Surviving Christmas becomes an Olympic event in endurance.

In your panoramas...
The Struggles of Nina Simone

Although today she is seen as one of the most original voices in jazz and soul, Nina Simone's life was anything but a smooth and gentle climb to the top. The woman who dreamed of being the first black American classical pianist had to struggle against others, against her own family, and even against herself.

The Little Tramp: The Great Composer

As the Paris Philharmonic puts on a major exhibition dedicated entirely to his career, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a look back at Charlie Chaplin’s close ties with music. He may be famous as a legendary performer and director, but the man with the iconic bowler hat and cane also composed the music in his films himself.

Stax, Sounds Like The South...

Motown in the North. And Stax in the South. Two quite distinct conceptions of soul music. In the southern humidity of Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and a few others invented a unique groove imbibed with blues and above all gospel.
