Verve's Standards Great Songs/Great Performances contains previously released tracks taken from Stan Getz's stint with the label in the ‘50s and 60s. The eight tracks, aimed at the casual listener, include such classics as "Body and Soul," “Summertime,” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” Getz is backed on “Pennies from Heaven” by the Oscar Peterson Trio, Astrud Gilberto provides vocals on “It Might as Well Be Spring,” and trombonist J.J. Johnson shares solo space on “It Never Entered My Mind.” Despite the drab packaging and lack of liner notes, the music of Stan Getz remains timeless in any context, making this a decent, affordable sampler for the novice.
