In 2019, the world woke up to Yola. Although the British singer had been a vocalist for electronic acts like Massive Attack and Bugz in the Attic for several years, she finally came into her own. She stole the show at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival, adding her voice to performances by the Highwomen, Dolly Parton and Dawes. Yola also released her first solo LP, Walk Through Fire—its title a reference to her surviving a house fire and an abusive relationship—which was produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach and earned three Grammy nominations. Artists from Elton John to Brandi Carlile sang her praises. Her follow-up, Stand for Myself, shows Yola isn't just surviving, she's thriving. Also produced by Auerbach, it expands beyond her debut, embracing '60s soul, shimmering disco, gospel and jam-band Americana. There are Dusty in Memphis vibes on the slinky "Starlight" and "Now You're Here." There are shades of Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Yola has been cast to play the rock 'n' roll pioneer in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Elvis biopic) on "If I Had to Do It All Again" and "Barely Alive," which finds Yola wringing out every bit of juice as she holds onto notes. But like the great Amy Winehouse (and yes, there are Winehouse echoes on tracks like "Dancing Away in Tears"), Yola knows how to do retro without it sounding musty or like she's wearing a costume. She is breathing new life into these classic sounds, like the reinvention of Motown on "Break the Bough." It's revelatory to hear her rich voice alongside the easy-rolling, Grateful Dead-esque music of "Diamond Studded Shoes," a joyful-sounding look at inequality: "Everybody's saying that it's gonna be alright/ But I can't help but wonder/ If it's gonna be on my dime/ We are the poor ones/ Rowing up against the tide." The same goes for the sunny '70s country-meets-garage rock of "Whatever You Want," her voice hitting a gritty stride on the kiss-off chorus to a "good old boy": "Those days are gone forever/ When I gave you whatever you want." And "Great Divide" is an absolute showstopper: feathery and romantic, sweetly soulful, stirringly gospel. Yola can pull it all off, effortlessly.
