For 32 minutes and 44 seconds, Jon Spencer shreds out some Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, Pussy Galore and Heavy Trash under his own name. In Spencer Sings The Hits!, the white trash James Brown of garage rock unsurprisingly dabbles in dirty rock and punk filled with blues, rockabilly and rhythm’n’blues. As always, by stripping down the genre to its primal scream, Spencer’s work shines with subversion. No illumination or overproduction, just brutal, wild and direct garage music carried by the charismatic voice of Mister Loyal. Spencer dresses in a worn suit and is supported by his two henchmen, Sam Coomes on bass and keyboard and Mike Gard on drums. Just like The Cramps these recordings scream, fuzz, beat and reverb. No surprise there: the best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

10 Legends of the Blues

For over a century, blues is still nourishing pop music of all kinds and producing great records. It's time to take a look back at the classics with ten historic blues musicians.

Pavement's Not-So-Secret Genre-Making History

Thirty years ago, Pavement set a road map for '90s indie rock—lo-fi, whip-smart, Gen-X cynical—with their career-defining Slanted and Enchanted. (And yes, the band came to define the term "slacker rock.") You can still hear their influence on artists like Courtney Barnett, Deerhunter, Beabadoobee, Parquet Courts, Kiwi Jr., and many more. And, of course, they famously, majorly inspired Blur's 1997 self-titled album, in effect changing the face of Brit-pop without even meaning to. As Pavement continues on their first tour since 2010, here's a look back at the band's history through their epochal records.

The Black Keys in 10 Songs

From 2001, The Black Keys have been reminding the world about the real roots of the Blues, cutting away all the frills and unnecessary solos. Their music has always been untamed, abrupt and minimalist. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney developed this unique style over the course of two decades, without once selling their souls to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads. Here are ten songs to prove it.
