Drummer Magnus Öström and bassist Dan Berglund, who made up the rhythm section of the legendary E.S.T. trio with late pianist Esbjörn Svensson, have joined forces with Bugge Wesseltoft to form Rymden. During the ‘90s, the Norweigan pianist, much like E.S.T for that matter, shook the jazz world with New Conception of Jazz. Now, the three Scandinavians are moving forward as a trio. Fans of Wesseltoft and E.S.T alike will hear elements of their previous music here and there in this album. But Space Sailors, not unlike its predecessor Reflections and Odysseys published in 2019, is in a world of its own, somewhere between acoustic and electric sounds. At times epic, at times contemplative and at other times even trippy, this album is daring with a bold choice of sound textures and all sorts of unexpected twists and turns. Above all, Rymden’s music finds its roots in a robust and rich melodic framework. Keep an open mind when you embark on this musical expedition. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

The Earth’s Song: The World of Gustav Mahler

What could have prompted Gustav Mahler to compose a work as unclassifiable as this one? Written between 1907 and 1908, a pivotal period in Mahler's life, The Song of the Earth occupies a special place within his oeuvre. It combines the “fin de siècle” spirit with the fascination for the exotic that was spreading amongst his peers at the time. Vienna was in turmoil when this music was composed, and the piece oscillates between the notions of farewell and new beginnings. With a lot of layers to peel back, The Song of the Earth definitely merits a closer look.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Nelson Freire, a Humble Virtuoso

A child prodigy in his native country, the Brazilian pianist who passed away in November 2021 kept his distance from the noisy fanfare of fame. His enormous hands and his natural and virtuoso technique always assisted his full, powerful and mellow sound. Here Qobuz looks back at the career of a musician that for a long time was the “best-kept secret in the world of the piano”.
