Before his death in 2006, Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure recorded some sessions in the Hotel Mande in Bamako, Mali. SAVANE, released posthumously, is taken from those sessions, and it bears testament to Farka Toure's standing as one of the giants of contemporary African music. The hallmarks of the artist's work are all here: gentle, mesmerizing tunes centered on sinuous, circular guitar patterns, and evocative vocal lines that float above the music and work in dialogue with the percussion. A valuable addition to Farka Toure's catalogue, SAVANE is a beautiful, elegant swan song that belongs alongside the artist's best work.

The Great History of Malian Music

Mandingo traditions or urban intersections, ancestral chants from the griots or dance bands on the day following the Independence, the family tree of Malian music possesses deep roots, leafy branches and a strong sap. Let’s take a look back at the fascinating history.

Bob Marley’s Unfinished Trilogy

It was precisely 40 years ago that Bob Marley released his final album, Uprising, the climax to his political trilogy (with Survival and Confrontation) that was left unfinished after Marley was taken by cancer in 1981. Let us look back at this Jamaican prophet’s shift towards militarism during his last three years on Earth.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their electric, guitar-soaked music has become its own category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard, as Western rockers continue to be drawn towards this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.
