There’s nothing iconoclastic about this ingenious album. The title itself, “Night Music”, suggests an album that’s happy to sail in familiar, calm waters. The 12 variations on "Ah ! Vous dirai-je, Maman’ (Mozart), Nachtstücke, Op. 23 (Schumann), and the three-movement Gaspard de la Nuit (Ravel) are all “showcase works” in the pianistic catalogue of each of these composers.
Music of the night: like Ariadne’s thread, this album links—sometimes painfully, granted—these three great piano masters together. There’s a nice surprise is in store in the last track of the album: Nocturne by Ignacy Paderewski, the consideration and simplicity of which is tremendous. Lisiecki’s remarkable interpretation is almost more memorable than the programme itself, and his trademark muted playing puts listeners in a dreamlike trance. This is especially true for his impressionist exploration of Gaspard de la Nuit.
