Two years after a promising first album, Tides in 2020, brothers Nick and Jordan Smart are back with their trademark dreamy music that lies somewhere between ambient, electronica and neo-classical. This second release shows a particularly careful sense of balance between acoustic instruments (Nick’s piano, Jordan’s sax and clarinet) and electronic sounds created on analogue synthesisers, which brings a rather unique touch. This record sounds as if it’s been submerged under a huge wave—though a warm, gentle one. The duo, who make up two thirds of the British jazz band Mammal Hands (alongside drummer Jesse Barrett), have released this effortless album with Gondwana (GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet’s label). Let yourself be carried away by Sunda Arc’s musical current. Enjoy the journey as you travel from the incredible opening track, ‘Distant Siren’, which sounds like a distant rave in the English countryside, through to more suspenseful moments on ‘Forgotten Dream’, which features two simple and haunting piano chords.
