After the widespread acclaim for their previous recordings of C. P. E Bach and Haydn, the musicians of the Resonanz Ensemble of Hamburg pursue their explorations on modern instruments. Here they tackle Mozart’s last three symphonies, which, it is generally agreed, ‘require no introduction’. And yet Riccardo Minasi does much more than introduce them: he reintroduces them to us. The rhetorical, if not theatrical, dimension of the celebrated trilogy comes into full focus here and the result is irresistible. © harmonia mundi

In your panoramas...
Glenn Gould, Extravaganza

How can I describe – let alone define – this truly one-of-a-kind pianist? As an alien, perhaps. An alien who whisks us away at supersonic speed before slowing down to land on an infinite world where there is time for everything. It is the acceptance and cultivation of his otherness (or his alienness?) that has made this unconventional pianist one of the greatest and most loved (and criticised) musicians ever.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.
