Amid the plethora of Hawkwind compilations that even their major-label homes have put out over the years, Masters of Rock is actually one of the most intelligent. Ranging across the band's early- to mid-'70s prime, it carries the saga through all the expected highs ("Master of the Universe," "Brainstorm," "Sonic Attack"); selects some of their best-known 45s (the rare "Lord of Light" among them); and even manages to throw in a brace of unreleased tracks (albeit from Hawkwind's late-'70s rebirth as opposed to their earlier peak). Still, previously unheard versions of "Love in Space" and Tim Blake's "Lighthouse" do meld surprisingly well with all that has gone before, and while no one should ever prefer a collection such as this to the chance to hear a full Hawkwind album, at least this one won't sending you screaming back for a refund.
