Apparently following the maxim “why make it simple when you could make it complicated”, Tool have built their album around a very elaborate calculation. Criticised by some for repeating themselves, the group mathematically prove the opposite in this confusing Lateralus. Alive 800 years ago, it was thanks to the mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci that you read that as ‘800’ and not ‘DCCC’ (he used Hindu-Arabic numerals instead of Roman numerals). He also defined the sequence that bears his name and that Tool have used for their third album. The principle is quite straightforward: except for the first two numbers, each number is found by adding up the two preceding numbers.

Beyond being a mathematical breakthrough, this sequence (which is closely linked to the golden ratio) is found all over the universe, from snail shells to galaxies, as well as cyclones, pineapples and even ratios used in technical analysis of the financial market... Tool’s intelligent band members applied their passion for Fibonacci to their compositions, under the guidance of drummer Danny Carey. But you don’t have to be a genius to appreciate Tool’s enchanting music. Regardless of their unique technical complexity, each of the thirteen (a Magic Number!) solid yet nuanced tracks carry you away like waves. And each time you listen, you are swept further away from the shore and everything you thought you knew. © Jean-Pierre Sabouret/Qobuz

Prog Rock in 10 Albums

Influence is a shapeless thing, moving and rearranging based on sounds from the past and how they align with sounds from the present. In the case of progressive rock, a genre relocated from the pop charts to sheet music stands and art rock-favored stereos over the past four decades, influence has shifted in a similar way—later records that expanded the lexicon have lapped previous records with the incorporation of new styles, cultures and their corresponding sounds. Prog may not be burning up the rock charts, but you can see the everlasting influence of the genre in bands ranging from Tool to Kanye West and beyond. With that said, here are ten crucial progressive rock releases for 2021 and beyond.

Elvis, Still The King?

45 years after his death, Elvis Presley remains an unparalleled precursor. But even if his most important performances of 1954/55 for Sun Records remain the cornerstone of rock’n’roll, the aura today of the King seems to be fading in favour of younger generations such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys among others. And yet…

10 Legends of the Blues

For over a century, blues is still nourishing pop music of all kinds and producing great records. It's time to take a look back at the classics with ten historic blues musicians.
