On their eponymous debut album, Journey were still trying to find their signature sound. They relied too much on prog rock, filling the album with meandering jazz-rock instrumentals that never quite catch fire. Furthermore, their pop songs are ill-formed and lack hooks -- in short, they are too mainstream for the progressive audience and too unfocused for the pop audience.
