Twenty years after her debut, Lisa Ekdah revisits pop gems past and present with the usual playfulness, finesse and class that we have become accustomed to from her. On Grand Songs, the Swede is covering a lot of ground, with versions of numbers by Billie Eilish (Wish You Were Gay), The Beatles (I Should Have Known Better), Bob Dylan (Most of the Time) and Beyoncé (If I Were a Boy), as well as Diana Ross and the Supremes (Stop! In the Name of Love), The Monkees (Take a Giant Step) and James Taylor (You Can Close Your Eyes). Like any jazz singer worth their salt, Ekdahl excels with this tricky material and takes advantage of it in order to showcase her unique vocal timbres. The backing here alternates between jazz quintet and large string orchestra with intimate sequences giving way to a dash of lush hedonism. Ekdahl is at her best when she dares to surprise, as on the delightful bossa nova version of I Should Have Known Better and her very 1950s jazz cover of If I Were a Boy. These two tracks are the clear the highlights of a delightful record. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Female Jazz Singers: 10 New Names to Know

When it comes to jazz singers, Billie, Ella, Sarah, and Nina may be firm favourites, but this vocal style is sprinkled with an array of exceptional singers ready to make their mark on this legendary genre. Can we still call it jazz? Or is it just that jazz as we know it is changing? Either way, it doesn’t make these vocalists any less incredible. So, without further ado, here are ten women who are making an impact on the world of jazz.

Ray Charles, a Stylist Under the Influence

A founding father of soul, whose career spanned half a century, Ray Charles cannot be reduced to a handful of famous hits. He is above all the master of the high-end musical crossover that makes an art of mixing genres, approaching one to better embrace the other. Ray Charles secularised gospel, enriched the blues, played jazz, sang country and approached rock'n'roll. Let's take a look back at his unique style based on the five listed here.

Chris Connor, a Forgotten Voice

What if she really was the greatest cool jazz singer of them all? Almost twelve years after she passed away, Chris Connor remains one of the most sensual voices of her generation. After all, there's more to life than Anita O'Day and June Christy...
