Music is about contrasts. And contrasts are Meek Mill's strong suit. On his fifth album, the Philadelphia rapper skilfully alternates between the harshness of full-blooded trap and the complexity of lyrics inspired by the troubles he has suffered. There is something about him that is firmly in step with the rap of his times, anchored without difficulty and without artifice in the trends of the moment. Whether in terms of production, vocals or themes, Expensive Pain is indeed an album of 2021, and a daring one, delivering some pretty off-the-wall tracks, like the superb Me (FWM) featuring A$AP Ferg. On an instrumental co-produced by Jahaan Sweet, Hollywood Cole and Boi-1da, he seems to embrace the sounds of the present while also taking us back to the early 2010s. This balance, this contrast, is what underpins Expensive Pain. Like when he moves from superficial, joyful rap on Sharing Locations (featuring Lil Baby and Lil Durk) to deep introspection with the next track, Expensive Pain.
