This slightly belated 80th birthday tribute to composer Terry Riley actually serves equally well as a survey of his music and influence, something that has been needed for quite a while now. Pianist Sarah Cahill catches the mystical, slightly ecstatic tone that makes Riley's music work, and she offers a nice selection of pieces going back to his pre-minimalist days and covering his post-minimalist days as well. Sample the ragtime-influenced Be Kind to One Another, a fine example of the jazz influence that crept into many of Riley's later works. Latin influences appear in a pair of the four-hand works Cahill performs with Regina Myers. But perhaps the high point of the album is the pair of discs devoted to commissioned works that reflect Riley's influence, perhaps wider than that of Glass or Reich. Two works, Keeril Makan's Before C and Elena Ruehr's In C Too, take Riley's most famous work as a point of departure, and the four-hand piano-and-electronics A Trilling Piece for Terry opens up a vista on the considerable creative interchange between Riley and composer Pauline Oliveros. A thoroughly satisfying release that will be listened to well into the future.
