In his first recording, Pianist Jean-Paul Gasparian had shown a healthy technique that is essential to play the music of Russian giants. But his strong play is also sensible. In his second disc that is now dedicated to Chopin, the young performer confirms these qualities. Especially in the four Ballads, true bravura pieces in which Jean-Paul Gasparian never fails. And if he shows rigor, he also gives himself the lyricism and beauty of these pages, from Nocturnes to Waltzes and Polonaises. His elegant expression and full sound make this new album a second essential milestone in the discography of the young pianist and more generally in that of Chopin. © Little Tribeca

Glenn Gould, Extravaganza

How can I describe – let alone define – this truly one-of-a-kind pianist? As an alien, perhaps. An alien who whisks us away at supersonic speed before slowing down to land on an infinite world where there is time for everything. It is the acceptance and cultivation of his otherness (or his alienness?) that has made this unconventional pianist one of the greatest and most loved (and criticised) musicians ever.

Nelson Freire, a Humble Virtuoso

A child prodigy in his native country, the Brazilian pianist who passed away in November 2021 kept his distance from the noisy fanfare of fame. His enormous hands and his natural and virtuoso technique always assisted his full, powerful and mellow sound. Here Qobuz looks back at the career of a musician that for a long time was the “best-kept secret in the world of the piano”.

Jorge Bolet, the Epitome of Franz Liszt

Franz Liszt’s music re-emerged in the early 1980’s and for once it was played in a way that was both poetic and lyrical, rather than simply getting the notes out. Jorge Bolet recorded a ground-breaking anthology of the Hungarian composer for DECCA, as well as other recordings for the Spanish label ENSAYO, for RCA in the 1970’s, for EVEREST in 1960, and studio and radio recordings in the 1950’s.
