At the end of the 1990s, Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club was a hit. For the Cuban singers involved in this revivalist project, the film’s extraordinary success meant leaving their forced retirement and enjoying the last years of their careers as acclaimed and international showmen. With his three solo albums, one of which was released after his death, jovial Ibrahim Ferrer confirmed that he was an excellent romance and bolero singer. First released in 2003, Buenos Hermanos won a Grammy. Today, it comes back with a new cover and booklet and in an expanded version entirely conceptualized by its original producer. American arranger and guitar player Ry Cooder changed the order of the tracks and added four previously unreleased songs to the album. Faustino Orama’s Me Voy Pa Sibanicú, Christina Saladrigas’s Ojos Malvados, Agustin Lara Aguirre del Pino’s Mujer, and Frank Grillo’s Ven Conmigo Guajira were all recorded during the same sessions and with the same dreamy cast of musicians (Orlando 'Cachaíto' López, Manuel Galbán, Angá Díaz, Chucho Valdés Jim Keltner, and Ry Cooder). The new tracks fit naturally in the album, giving us even more to love and marvel. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz

Tropicália: the Story of a Brazilian Revolution

In the late 1960s, a group of young Brazilian artists rose up against the ruling military junta by fusing local popular music, rock and avant-garde. Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes and their friends invented tropicália, one of the most original musical adventures of the 20th century.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their electric, guitar-soaked music has become its own category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard, as Western rockers continue to be drawn towards this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

Tango: Sounds of the Río de la Plata

Rooted in dance and eventually becoming its very own artistic movement, the history of tango is an epic one; and its future truly looks limitless. A musical genre with hybrid origins, it remains one of the most incredible creations to come out of Río de la Plata. “It’s the only thing we don’t ask Europe for its opinion on,” wrote Argentina’s Macedonio Fernández, the man that young Jorge Luis Borges admired “to the point of devout and passionate plagiarism.” A number of coincidences in the late 19th century gave rise to this style of music. As musicologist Carlos Vega said: "no one really tried to create tango." And yet, here it is; complete with its own traditions and innovations, as well as its own golden age, ill-fated artists, myths and rituals.
