The value of this 1992 Philips release should be self-evident, though listeners unfamiliar with Béla Bartók's rich piano music or Zoltán Kocsis' splendid reputation may need further reassurance. The pieces on the first installment of Kocsis' seven-volume series represent the fertile period that began in 1908, when Bartók melded the influences of Strauss, Liszt, and Hungarian folk music into a new and vital musical language, which would thence forward distinguish him as one of the greatest modernists, along with Stravinsky and Schoenberg. Also, Bartók's works have seldom been played as imaginatively or as subtly as they are here, and Kocsis has earned his fame as a leading interpreter of the composer by imparting energy, freshness, and depth to this music that few can match. These criteria should be persuasive, but listening to this excellent disc will be final proof of its worth. Philips offers excellent recording quality, and Kocsis' performances have full color, natural resonance, and an almost palpable presence.

8 Great Women of Electronic

From the pioneers of musique concrete to the stars of 21st century clubbing, Qobuz is celebrating eight women who have left their own distinct marks on electronic music over the past fifty years.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
