Shy Boys

Folding the rich harmonies and melodic sweetness of '60s sunshine pop and the Beach Boys into adventurous contemporary indie pop, Shy Boys emerged with their eponymous debut in 2014. They sharpened their sound and spotlighted vocal harmonies on 2018's Bell House before taking more-experimental diversions reminiscent of Animal Collective with 2020's Talk Loud. The children of a concert pianist and a jazz musician, Kansas City, Missouri natives Collin and Kyle Rausch grew up singing together from a young age, including in their church choir. They played separately in a variety of other bands in the area before they formed Shy Boys with Kyle's ACBs bandmate Konnor Ervin in 2012. Revealing an affection not only for '60s-style harmonies but surf rock, the group's jangly self-titled debut also established their knack for melody and nuanced chord progressions when it arrived on Kansas City's High Dive Records in 2014. Ross Brown and Kyle Little were added to the lineup over the next couple of years. Shy Boys stepped up the production while retaining the warm, human elements of their sound for their second album, leading to a record deal with Polyvinyl in early 2018. Named for the building that acted as the band's longtime base, Bell House arrived that August. That year, the group also toured in support of Cut Worms and labelmates STRFKR, and opened a show in North Carolina for Fleet Foxes. Working with expanded instrumentation, including an emphasis on synths and percussion over guitars, Shy Boys recorded their third album at Jackpot Studios in Portland. Overdubs and additional mixing took place at their home studio. The resulting Talk Loud saw release on Polyvinyl in September 2020.
