Sarah Grace
Blessed with a big, bluesy voice that sounds older than her years, Sarah Grace made a splash on the 15th season of The Voice in late 2018. As part of the team mentored by Kelly Clarkson -- the vocal similarities between the two Texans were apparent -- Grace survived until the fifth week of the show, but that was long enough for her to create a lasting impression with her smoky, jazzy interpretation of "Amazing Grace." This served as an ideal platform to launch a career outside of The Voice, which she quickly seized by releasing the single "What I Came For" with her band the Soul, and then supporting it with a tour the following year.
A native of Houston, Grace was diagnosed with synesthesia -- a condition where she sees colors whenever she hears music -- as a child. After the synesthesia faded, she decided to pursue music as a passion and then a career. While she was in middle school, she began playing the trumpet, then picked up several other instruments while she attended Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. During this time, she also made inroads into Houston's blues and jazz community, performing with her band Campfire Soul, which also featured her sister Regan Kimberly on drums along with bassist Daniel Holder. By the time Grace auditioned for The Voice in early 2018, the trio switched their name to Sarah Grace and the Soul.
Grace was 15 years old when she debuted on The Voice, earning attention from all three judges for her version of "Ball and Chain" -- a Big Mama Thornton tune popularized by Janis Joplin. Grace continued to the main portion of the show, staying in the competition until its fifth week. The week prior to her elimination, Grace earned significant buzz for her smoldering version of the hymn "Amazing Grace," which featured a trumpet solo from Grace herself.
Grace's appearance helped raise the profile of her and her band. The Houston Press named her "Best Newcomer of 2019," and the group released the original single "What I Came For" by the end of 2018. Early in 2019, the trio set out on an American tour.
