Pearson Sound

Pearson Sound is the main alias of David Kennedy, a London-based producer, DJ, and mix engineer at the forefront of experimental bass music and U.K. soundsystem culture. Along with Ben UFO and Pangaea, he is one of the three founders of the highly influential, cutting-edge label Hessle Audio. First producing dubstep as Ramadanman during the 2000s, Kennedy gradually incorporated garage, techno, and footwork influences into his sound, and released the mix Fabriclive 56 (credited to both Ramadanman and Pearson Sound) in 2011. He continued exploring a bass-heavy experimental style with releases like the 2015 full-length Pearson Sound and left-field club hits like 2022's Red Sky EP. David Kennedy entered the dubstep scene under the name Ramadanman around 2006 and co-founded Hessle Audio with Ben UFO and Pangaea. Ramadanman's releases appeared on Soul Jazz, Apple Pips, and Aus Music. Kennedy debuted his Pearson Sound alias in 2009 with a series of 12"s that increasingly showed more of a house and garage influence, as well as the burgeoning Chicago footwork scene. Kennedy began to phase out his Ramadanman alias; his 2011 Fabriclive 56 mix CD was credited to both names, but nearly all subsequent releases were under the Pearson Sound moniker. A 2011 white label 12" on Night Slugs showed Kennedy nodding to two of his influences, with remixes of Baltimore club producer Rod Lee's "Let Me See What U Workin With" and "Little" Louie Vega side project Hardrive's "Deep Inside," and pushing the project into a more breakbeat-heavy style. Kennedy collaborated with Joy Orbison and Boddika on a 12" on their SunkLo label in 2012, and launched the Pearson Sound label the same year with a series of singles and EPs continuing to push his sound into more fractured, experimental directions. Pearson Sound, the producer's sparse, percussive full-length debut, appeared on Hessle Audio in 2015. He continued releasing inventive club singles like "Thaw Cycle" and 2016's acclaimed "XLB." 2017's Robin Chasing Butterflies EP had more of an ambient electro feel, while 2018's Rubble was rougher and more acid-heavy. The breakbeat-driven Alien Mode (his first Hessle release in five years) appeared in 2020, followed by "Mi Cuerpo," a collaboration with reggaetón artist and DJ Clara! The propulsive, sci-fi-tinged Red Sky was issued in 2022.
