Kellen Gray

African American conductor Kellen Gray's activities extend from his native American South to the British Isles. He is the assistant conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, with which he released his debut album in 2022. Gray was born on June 17, 1985, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. His father was a music teacher and football coach, and his mother was a school librarian. As a youth, Gray wanted to be a football player and then a herpetologist, but he realized that his size likely made a sports career impossible, and he became fascinated by the violin after receiving free lessons at the city's Castle Heights Middle School. A teacher suggested that he attend the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University in Georgia, and he earned a scholarship there and graduated with a violin degree. He also earned an artist's diploma in conducting, and he became more and more interested in that field. However, the realities of making a living as a musician led to burnout, and for five years, Gray took a break from music and worked for a beekeeping business in Savannah. His desire to be involved with music proved stronger, however, and he returned to school for a master's degree at Georgia's Valdosta State University. It was at this point that he devoted himself fully to conducting, and he graduated in 2014. From 2014 to 2016, Gray served as assistant conductor of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. He was also the music director of the Valdosta Youth Orchestra. A breakthrough for Gray came when he became a Project Inclusion Freeman Conducting Fellow in Chicago. The position led to an assistant conductor position with the Chicago Sinfonietta under music director Mei-Ann Chen; he led that orchestra in a performance at the Chicago Symphony Center. In 2018, he became assistant conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina and music director of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra; he was later promoted to associate conductor there. In 2021, Gray added the position of assistant conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to his resume, with a two-year contract. With that group, he released his debut album, African American Voices, including orchestral works by William Grant Still, George Walker, and the neglected William Levi Dawson; the album appeared on the Linn label. In the early 2020s, Gray had plans to conduct major ensembles on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
