As football fever swept across France in the summer of 2016 and the host nation marched to the final of the European Championships, young, up-and-coming rapper Keblack received a huge publicity boost when star players Patrice Evra and Paul Pogba were filmed dancing and singing along to his track J'ai Deconne (I Screwed Up). Keblack was relatively unknown at the time, but the video quickly went viral and his song received over five million views on YouTube. Originally from Congo, he grew up in Commanderie, Nogent-sur-Oise in Northern France and learned his rap skills from his elder brother, who performed under the name BlackChat. Drawing comparisons with fellow Congolese rapper Maitre Gims, he first built his reputation by posting mobile phone videos of himself freestyling on social media sites, before mixing trap, reggae and Caribbean styles together on his debut EP Tout Va Bien (Everything Is Fine) in 2015. Signed to Bomaye Musik, he has also collaborated with Naza on On Est Equipe, with Fababy on Physio and with Kandia Kora on Fais Bisous, and follows the tradition of immigrant children living in suburban housing blocks on the outskirts of big French cities using hip-hop to vent their frustrations and dreams.
