GoGo Penguin
Idioma disponível: inglêsGoGo Penguin is a charting, left-field jazz piano trio from Manchester, England. They seamlessly wed rock, post-bop jazz, and minimalist classical influences, to discoveries in electronic music and production by artists such as Aphex Twin and Four Tet. They compose and arrange as a group. Their original material work creates a punchy, experimental yet always accessible music that incorporates a wide variety of source material and ultimately refuses strict genre definitions. Their second full length, 2014's v2.0, was shortlisted for Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year alongside titles by Damon Albarn, Young Fathers, and Jungle. They signed to Blue Note Records in 2015 and issued their label debut, Man Made Object, the following year, which placed inside the Top Ten on the jazz albums charts, as did A Humdrum Star in 2018 and Ocean in a Drop: Music for Film the following year. GoGo Penguin were formed in Manchester, England in 2012 by pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. Mixing melodic landscapes with dynamic skittering beats and electronic elements, the band creates a heady blend that owes as much to Massive Attack and Brian Eno as it does to traditional jazz or classical. They released a pair of albums on the Gondwana label, announcing themselves with 2012's Fanfares, then expanded their sonic scope with 2014's v2.0, the latter of which earned them a Mercury Prize nomination. In early 2015, they struck a deal with Blue Note Records and began recording their third LP. The album -- titled Man Made Object -- arrived in early 2016. The group's second effort for the label, A Humdrum Star, was released in February 2018. In 2019, the trio decided to forgo touring and focus on studio time in order to dig deeper into their musical journey. That year saw the arrival of the EP Ocean in a Drop: Music for Film, which was inspired by Philip Glass' 1982 cult documentary Koyaanisqatsi. Their fifth full-length album, the self-titled GoGo Penguin, followed in 2020. Co-produced by live soundman Joe Reiser and Brendan Williams, the ten-track set was a result from a different working method. Instead of evolving compositions from a single idea they developed as a group, the trio co-composed many songs and used a process of grafting to combine and recombine their sources onto one another to create expansive mini-suites. The album was released in early June of 2020.
