He masterminded a slew of surf-rock singles under a variety of “band” names, produced everyone from the Byrds to Dick Dale, and with fellow writer/producer Curt Boettcher, he created psych-pop legends Sagittarius, who had a hit with “My World Fell Down.” Usher was only 51 years old when he died of cancer in 1990.
