Faith Healer

Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Faith Healer is the psych-pop project of singer/songwriter Jessica Jalbert and her collaborator Renny Wilson. After releasing an album under her own name in the early 2010s, Jalbert teamed up with Wilson to record Faith Healer's acclaimed 2015 debut album, Cosmic Troubles for Vancouver indie Mint Records. Their sophomore set, Try ;-) (2017), was also a critical success and was longlisted for the Polaris Prize. After recording solely as a duo, Faith Healer expanded their lineup to create a livelier, more dynamic sound on 2023's The Hand That Fits the Glove. Jalbert initially began her music career as a solo artist, crafting winsome chamber pop tunes and releasing a handful of singles as well as the album Brother Loyola for the Old Ugly label in 2012. She was also part of the garage rock trio Tee Tahs and was in Renny Wilson's band Punk Explosion. Rather than risk being pigeonholed as a folk singer/songwriter, she soon adopted the name Faith Healer to represent her future work. Enlisting Wilson as her producer and creative partner, the two set about recording an album together, playing all of the instruments themselves. Titled Cosmic Troubles, the set was released by Mint Records in March 2015. Its vivid blend of '60s-indebted psychedelia and tuneful indie pop was well received by critics, and the two soon began working on a follow-up. With Wilson now considered an official bandmember, Faith Healer recorded in a similar fashion with both musicians handling the instrumentation on 2017's more focused, classic rock- and pop-influenced Try ;-). Using additional musicians to support them live, the duo performed at the Montreal Pop Festival, and their album was longlisted for the 2018 Polaris Prize. A lengthy gap followed before the release of the pair's next project. For the first time since their formation, Faith Healer opened up their sound to include outside musicians. Along with touring bassist Jenni Roberts, they invited drummer Conor Donaldson and multi-instrumentalists Mitch Davis and Ross Nicol into the studio for their third album, giving it a more expansive and textured live-band feel. The Hand That Fits the Glove was released by Mint Records in late 2023.
