Domingo Hindoyan

Conductor Domingo Hindoyan, a product of the El Sistema music education program, is a rising figure in both opera and orchestral music. He is the chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Hindoyan was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on February 15, 1980. His father, Domingo Garcia, was a violinist and a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela; his mother, an attorney, was born in Syria to parents of Armenian background. He was trained as a violinist in Venezuela's famed music education program, El Sistema. Switching to conducting, Hindoyan enrolled at the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Switzerland, studying with Laurent Gay and earning highest honors. At the Allianz International Conductors' Academy in 2012, he studied with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Sir Andrew Davis and worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra. Hindoyan also took master classes from Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, and Jesús López Cobos. Hindoyan began his career in 2013 as first assistant conductor under Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. Soon he became guest conductor there and led a wide variety of productions, including one of Stravinsky's ballet, The Rite of Spring. Other guest conducting engagements began to come Hindoyan's way, including one at the Bergen National Opera in Norway (in Rossini's Il turco in Italia) and one at the Opéra national de Lorraine (in the same composer's Semiramide). In January of 2018, Hindoyan made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, conducting Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, and the following two years saw him make debuts at several more European and American houses, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago (with Puccini's La Bohème), the Vienna State Opera, and the Liceu Grand Theater in Barcelona. Meanwhile, Hindoyan was building a conducting career with guest appearances on the podium with internationally prominent ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège. He became the principal guest conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2019, and the following year, he was named chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in England. Hindoyan made his recording debut in 2022 with that group, conducting a program of works by Debussy, Dukas, and Roussel on the Onyx Classics label.
