CyHi

CyHi, also known as CyHi the Prynce, relates street knowledge through lucid rhymes packed with ingenious metaphors. The rapper emerged from the Atlanta underground in 2010 with a contribution to Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, kick-starting his career and beginning an enduring affiliation with West, who has routinely sought his input since then. In addition to being Grammy-nominated as a co-writer of West's subsequent "New Slaves," "Bound 2," "All Day," "Famous," and "Ultralight Beam" as well as Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode," CyHi has a lengthy solo discography. It includes numerous mixtapes, the charting No Dope on Sundays (his 2017 debut album for Sony), and the appetizing EGOT the EP (independently released in 2022), issued while his collaborative work has expanded with other artists, such as 2 Chainz, Drake, and Big Sean. Born Cydel Charles Young in Stone Mountain, Georgia, CyHi entered the music industry in the late 2000s as a member of Hoodlum. The group's deal with Jazze Pha's Def Jam-distributed Sho'nuff label didn't pan out, nor did CyHi's later solo arrangement with Akon's Konvict Muzik, though CyHi did step forward with What da Decs Been Missin, a mixtape presented by DJ/producer Greg Street. In 2010, CyHi's profile was raised significantly with the release of Royal Flush, his first true tape, along with appearances on cuts by Yelawolf, A-Trak, B.o.B., and, most notably, Kanye West. CyHi held his own as the newcomer beside RZA, Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz, and Pusha T on West's "So Appalled," originally released that September as part of the GOOD Fridays series, before it appeared on the Billboard 200-topping My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Before the end of the year, it became evident that CyHi's association with West was not fleeting, as CyHi was featured on non-album GOOD Fridays tracks like "Christmas in Harlem." As CyHi steadily added to his mixtape catalog over the next five years with Royal Flush 2, Jack of All Trades, and multiple volumes of Ivy League and Black Hystori Project, he racked up accolades for his involvement with West. After he was featured on West's 2012 GOOD Music compilation Cruel Summer, he co-wrote all but one song on the following year's Yeezus. CyHi earned his first Grammy nominations with the Yeezus tracks "New Slaves" and "Bound 2," and would extend his streak of nods for Best Rap Song to four years as a co-writer of "All Day" (a non-album single that went Top 20 pop), followed by "Ultralight Beam" and "Famous" (a Top 40 hit), both of which came from 2016's Life of Pablo and were up for the award at the 59th Grammy ceremony. Shortly thereafter, CyHi co-wrote "Glow" featuring West for Drake's chart-topping More Life playlist. Having secured a solo contract with Sony Music, CyHi then put together his first proper album, No Dope on Sundays, with featured roles for the likes of West, Pusha T, ScHoolboy Q, and 2 Chainz (who had previously connected with CyHi on "Freebase"). The set landed at number 65 on the Billboard 200 after its November 2017 release. Also among the supporting cast for No Dope on Sundays was Travis Scott, who subsequently enlisted CyHi to co-write the 2018 single "Sicko Mode." The song became a number one pop hit and earned CyHi his sixth Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song. CyHi followed that success with a handful of additional collaborations, enhancing tracks by the likes of Jack Harlow ("Drip Drop"), Royce da 5'9" ("Black Savage"), Big Sean ("Harder Than My Demons"), and Kanye West (the number 11 pop hit "Off the Grid") through 2021. CyHi set up EGOT Records as an outlet for his solo work, and in 2022 returned with EGOT the EP.
