Cryptopsy

A Canadian death metal group known for their uncompromising sonic attack and technical acuity, Cryptopsy emerged from the fertile Montreal extreme metal scene in 1992. Their debut studio album, 1995's Blasphemy Made Flesh, established the band as a force to be reckoned with in the metal underground. Cryptopsy expanded their fan base in 1998 with the release of Whisper Supremacy, their first outing for Century Media, where they would remain until moving to Nuclear Blast for their eighth long-player, 2023's As Gomorrah Burns. The seeds for Cryptopsy were sewn in the late '80s when drummer Mike Atkin, guitarist Steve Thibault, vocalist Dan "Lord Worm" Greening, and bassist John Todds began operating under the moniker Necrosis. A series of lineup changes resulting in the departures of Atkin and Todds initiated a rebrand, with Lord Worm and Thibault conscripting Kevin Weagle and Dave Galea to rally under the Cryptopsy banner. The newly minted group quickly rose to the fore of the Montreal death metal scene with their 1993 demo Ungentle Exhumation and gained a foothold in Europe after signing to Germany's Invasion Records the following year. A re-tooled lineup featuring Lord Worm, guitarists Jon Levasseur and Miguel Roy, bassist Eric Langlois, and drummer Flo Mounier put out the punishing Blasphemy Made Flesh in 1995. Moving to Sweden's Wrong Again Records in 1996, Cryptopsy's next effort was the eight-song EP None So Vile, which came out immediately before Lord Worm quit the band due to health problems. Immediately replaced, with Lord Worm's blessing, by ex-Infestation frontman Mike Disalvo, Cryptopsy released their third album, 1998's Whisper Supremacy, their first for Century Media. Disalvo left the group shortly after the release of 2000's And Then You'll Beg, with Martin LaCroix taking over as the band's live vocalist. 2003's None So Live, recorded the year prior at The Medley in Montreal, is the only Cryptopsy release to feature LaCroix. 2005's Once Was Not marked the return of Lord Worm, who once again left the fold after the album's tour. The band conscripted vocalist Matt McGachy before the release of 2008's The Unspoken King, which saw the band adopt a more melodic deathcore-oriented style. Cryptopsy restored their original technical death metal sound on their eponymous seventh full-length effort, released in 2012, which they followed with a pair of EPs, The Book of Suffering – Tome I and The Book of Suffering – Tome II, in 2015 and 2018, respectively. The group inked a deal with Nuclear Blast in 2022, which they celebrated the following year with the release of As Gomorrah Burns.
