Anteloper

With deep links to the Chicago scene, Anteloper are a Brooklyn-formed experimental, improv jazz duo comprising Fly or Die trumpeter Jaimie Branch and Little Women drummer Jason Nazary, who make use of synths and effects. The pair met in 2002 at the New England Conservatory of Music, but it wasn't until 2017 that they formed Anteloper in Brooklyn. Branch was born in Huntington, Long Island and began to learn the trumpet at the age of nine, after having moved to the Chicago suburb of Wilmette. Nazary was born at the Aviano Air Base in northeastern Italy while his father was posted there on military service, but he was ultimately raised in Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S. On departing New England in 2005, Nazary moved to New York, while Branch moved back to Chicago, where she worked on various projects in subsequent years with the likes of Jason Ajemian, Keefe Jackson, and Tim Daisy. Around this time, Nazary helped to form Little Women, who released their debut record, Teeth, in 2007. Branch's subsequent late-2000s projects included her own trio, Princess, and another named Block and Tackle before she decamped to Baltimore to study for a master's degree in Jazz Performance. While on the course, she formed Bomb Shelter and created the Pionic label to release their music. In 2015, Branch moved to Brooklyn, where she began to host jazz nights that specifically featured revered Chicago musicians. A natural next step was for Branch to create her Fly or Die project, which featured Ajemian as well as Tomeka Reid and Chad Taylor. Fly or Die saw an album release on Chicago's International Anthem in May 2017. That label went on to issue Anteloper's debut, Kudu, in April 2018, a record which captured Branch and Nazary's foreboding, glitchy improv live at Brooklyn's Carefree Studios. A month later, the pair reconvened at the local Pioneer Works art center for sessions which resulted in their Tour Beats, Vol. 1 EP. This Anteloper release first appeared as a limited cassette sold on a late 2019 U.S. tour with Blacks' Myths, but was eventually issued on vinyl the following year by International Anthem. Next, Branch once again turned her attention to Fly or Die, with whom she toured Europe in early 2020. Their Zurich date eventually appeared as the Fly or Die Live album in May 2021. Two early 2022 Anteloper singles -- radio edits of "One Living Genus" and "Earthlings," the latter featuring Branch's vocals -- hinted at the accessible, less discordant, space-inspired sound explored by the duo on their June 2022 album, Pink Dolphins.
