Alfie Firmin

U.K. singer/songwriter Alfie Firmin's bittersweet, breezy indie tunes are the perfect complement to his thoughtful lyrics and good-natured delivery. He established his songwriting style and full-band approach on his first two solo albums, 2018's Setting Sun and 2020's Waiting On, which showcased warm, California-evoking folk-rock arrangements of electric guitars, lap steel, and vintage organs alongside a rhythm section. Following the arrival of a pandemic and foiled plans to move abroad, his more frustrated third album, 2023's Absentee, again embraced a deceptively sweet sound with touches of McCartney and Laurel Canyon. In his late teens, just before going the solo route, Alfie Firmin recorded an album under the band moniker Vestiges. Essentially Firmin with drummer Jakub Rokosz and some help from engineer/instrumentalist Mark Jasper, Evelyn was recorded in a shared Wimbledon, England home and named for the street where it was located. Self-released in December 2017, its California folk-rock inspirations and bittersweet melodies -- with an emphasis on the sweet -- essentially served as an unofficial solo debut. He made his solo debut proper in November 2018 with Setting Sun. Issued by Idle Hands Recording Co., it was written, recorded, and performed almost entirely alone by Firmin, with only additional guitar by Marcus Lennartsson and additional electric piano by David Placht. The same label handled distribution of his next album, February 2020's Waiting On, which was recorded more collaboratively with multi-instrumentalist/engineer Jonny Coddington. Lennartsson co-wrote one of the songs as well as mixing and mastering the album. A long-planned move to Sweden was thwarted with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Firmin eventually settled down in the Essex resort town of Southend-on-Sea. A self-released four-song EP, Familiar Ways, appeared in October 2021 before he signed with Bobo Integral for his third LP. With songs that grappled with recent events through a familiarly sun-streaked musical lens, Absentee was tracked at the Soapworks Recording Studio in South London with Coddington before overdubs were captured at SS2 Studios with Rees Broomfield. Its handful of contributors included Ted Groves (piano, guitar, drums, backing vocals), M.G. Boulter (steel guitar), and Dave Huntriss (brass).
