Entrance

Guy Blakeslee is the brainchild behind the kitschy rock sound of Entrance. Blending threads of T. Rex glam with Big Star/Cheap Trick-styled pop hooks and more homespun acid folk, Entrance offers something more tangible than what Blakeslee put out working with the Convocation Of... in Baltimore. As a resident of Chicago, Entrance became a regular performer at The Hideout, a local bar that hosted a Monday night cabaret with Zwan's Matt Sweeney. For 18 months, Entrance honed his soulful indie rock. Tiger Style picked up on his alluring appeal and inked him a deal. Entrance's debut, The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken by Storm, appeared in early 2002, and tours with Devendra Banhart and Cat Power followed into the spring. Before 2003 came to a close, Entrance released the Honey Moan EP. The year 2004 saw the release of the Careless Love EP and the blues-drenched Wandering Stranger album, which was issued by Fat Possum. For the full-length Prayer of Death, released in fall 2006, Blakeslee signed to Tee Pee and joined musician Paz Lenchantin (Zwan, A Perfect Circle) for the most ambitious release of his career to date. Tweaking the name after solidifying the lineup of Blakeslee, Lenchantin, and drummer Derek James (from Prayer of Death), the group released Entrance Band as the Entrance Band in 2009 via Ecstatic Peace/Universal. The three-song session Untitled (aka Latitudes) arrived in March 2012, five months before another EP, Fine Flow, debuted on Spiritual Pajamas. Dans la Tempete closed out the trio of EPs in the summer of 2013 before the full-length Face the Sun was released that November by Beyond Records. Around that time, the Spike Jonze film Her was appearing at festivals before getting a wide release and being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 2014. Entrance's cover of Skip James' "I'm So Glad" appeared in the film. Blakeslee put out the solo albums Ophelia Slowly and The Middle Sister under his own name in 2014 and early 2016, respectively. Back down to a band of one, he followed these with his first just-plain-Entrance release in a decade. The EP, titled Promises, was delivered by Thrill Jockey in September 2016. The label also released the song cycle Book of Changes in early 2017.
