O ano era 1967. Caetano Veloso lançava seu primeiro disco com Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil lançava seu Procissão e Roberto Carlos já era uma celebridade na televisão. Enquanto Tom Jobim estava nos Estados Unidos gravando com Frank Sinatra, a ascensão da Tropicália e da Bossa Nova fazia o grande público brasileiro se desinteressar pela cafona Bossa Nova. Abatido com essa situação e com saudade do Brasil, o carioca decidiu traduzir esse sentimento em um disco arregimentado pelo alemão Claus Ogerman.
Wave foi e ainda é um dos álbuns mais populares do compositor, reunindo sucessos como a faixa-título, Triste (que seria magistralmente regravada com letra por Elis Regina anos depois) e Lamento, a única canção do disco, cuja letra foi escrita por Vinícius de Moraes. Todos os temas foram compostos por Tom Jobim, a maioria inéditos ao público.
Neste álbum, o maestro carioca pouco foge de suas referências bossa-novistas, ainda fortemente baseadas no seu som de piano e violão, e das harmonias jazzísticas-impressionistas. Apesar disso, vemos alguns elementos como o cravo na faixa Antígua e a harmonia modal de Mojave, fragmentos das estéticas mais experimentais que Tom exploraria no decorrer dos anos 70.
Com uma banda metade brasileira e metade estadunidense, Jobim finca mais um posto na lista de “discos necessários” da Bossa Nova.
