Rufus Wainwright's beautiful voice is at its best on this live album, which is in part a revisiting of Unfollow The Rules, his 2020 record that saw him return to pure, simple songs in a more classic, traditional style. The Canadian also opens up his back catalogue and offers two previously unreleased tracks, Treat A Lady and Happy Easter. The first song is a sublime ballad lasting almost six minutes, and one is reminded of Randy Newman's more intimate pieces, with a very strong piano line... One's attention is on Wainwright's words, as he talks about a walk through New York, passing by Park Avenue. We feel all the strong emotions and pangs of the singer in this poetic evocation of the Big Apple. The second piece, Happy Easter, is a touchingly melancholic track. Throughout this album, recorded live in that legendary spot in Los Angeles called The Paramour, we are placed under the spell of Rufus Wainwright's voice and its hypnotic power, which confirms the greatness of this extraordinary artist. This album also contains a very nice version of Peaceful Afternoon. The lack of drums makes Wainwright's voice even more powerful. It commands respect with its raw, unalloyed beauty.
